Mercedes-Benz launched the first version of the G-Class more than 30 years ago, and it has just been confirmed that since then the German carmaker has delivered more than two million units of G-Class, GLK-Class, GL-Class, R-Class and M-Class models to its customers, with utility vehicles now accounting for about a fifth of the automaker’s global sales.
We all know that the SUV market has grown a lot in recent years, and Mercedes-Benz was surely prepared to exploit this market as its sales of this kind of vehicle increased by more than 24 % in 2011. Mercedes-Benz Cars’ Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Dr. Joachim Schmidt commented that the company’s “entire” SUV family is “extremely popular” among its customers, specifically in the USA and in China, which is its second biggest market. He also added that “SUVs today are an important pillar of Mercedes-Benz’s growth and have achieved a new sales record in every month since July 2010.”
Mercedes-Benz expects growth in the SUV segment to continue through 2012. The German automaker recently launched an all-new version of its popular M-Class SUV and will soon launch the new generations of the GLK and the G-Class as well as the new GL, which are expected to reinforce Mercedes’ position in this segment even further.
