This year’s Fleet World MPG Marathon - an established eco-driving competition taking place in the UK - has been unexpectedly won by Vauxhall VXR8. The car was not awarded for best overall efficiency, but because it recorded the highest improvement in comparison to the official fuel consumption figures issued by the carmaker, with an impressive 53%. The VXR8 is powered by a LS3 6.2 litres V8, and Vauxhall says the average fuel consumption for the model is 13.4 litres/100km. With Top Gear journalist Chris Mooney behind the wheel and eco-driving expert Andrew Duerden as co-driver, the car managed to lower that figure to 8.8 litres/100km. “It just goes to show that the person behind the wheel can make a massive difference to fuel costs and carbon emissions”, said Mooney “and, of course, that a 6.2-liter V8 is a very sensible choice of engine in the right hands.”
