At first glance this Skoda Rapid Spaceback looks like the estate version of the Rapid hatchback that was released last year so you would think that this Rapid offers more boot space than the hatch. But you’d be wrong because Skoda has actually made an estate version that has 135 litre less boot space with the rear seats up and 110 litres less with them down.
The reason for this anomoly is that the Spaceback is 180mm shorter than the hatch. Perhaps the Spaceback name is a bit misleading then. We haven’t had chance to look inside but we’re told that this version’s just as roomy as the hatch, so perhaps the spaceback is just a stylistic choice if you prefer the Audi A3-like looks of the Spaceback over the boxier hatch.
In terms of engine choices there are six available, four petrol and two diesel with power ranging from 74bhp to 121bhp. The 1.6 litre TDI offers the best economy at 74.3mpg and the best emissions rating at 99g/km of CO2. Five-speed manual transmission is standard but a seven-speed DSG gearbox is also available. We’re hoping that a 178bhp Rapid vRS version will be made available but we haven’t had confirmation. Perhaps this sort of information will be made available when the car is shown at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
We haven’t been given a price but it won’t be more than a small premium over the £12,905 the Skoda Rapid hatch costs.
