De Tomaso Deauville - Salone di Ginevra Live 2011

After the De Tomaso Deauville was revealed at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, it was already clear that the company had plans to revive the famous De Tomaso Pantera, so there’s no news there. But in more statements from the show, De Tomaso sales and marketing boss Gianluca Rossignolo, has revealed more of the company’s plans to grow.

We think it will probably be a struggle to get the new De Tomaso company project off the ground, particularly as its first product, the Deauville, didn’t generate the accolades to make things more comfortable. Still, the sedan-crossover model is headed for production at a newly fitted plant, and De Tomaso hopes to make about 3,000 units a year starting from 2012.

It will be joined by a future Pantera supercar and a standard four-door limousine. The company is aiming high on the luxury stakes, with Rossignolo saying: “I would like to think that we could become the Italian Aston Martin, dealing in the same kind of exclusive luxury and craftmanship.”

While Europe will probably prove to be the main De Tomaso market, there is plenty of interest from China. Particularly if the company can pull off its “Italian Aston Martin” ambition, the demand in that market for luxury Italian products is high. Is there room for a new player? We’ll have to wait and see what the future brings.
