That Jaguar could look at producing a smaller BMW 3 Series rival makes perfect sense, a possible Jaguar 4×4 Crossover model is being considered a significant departure from the brand’s tradition. It makes perfect sense as well, though, when considering the success of competitor models in that segment, and opportunities for greater sales growth in the North American auto market.

According to Autocar, Jaguar is considering both of these models as part of a future strategy for growth that would satisfy owners, Tata Motors. The latter are investing significantly in the Jaguar Land Rover brands; and new design and an expanding model range will be the only way to increase sales to meet the targets set (up to 100,000 units a year in the medium term).

The new Jaguar 3 Series rival will be a sports sedan model of high quality, luxury finishes and a premium price tag. The project X760 as its known, will use a new aluminium monocoque platform to reduce weight, and will likely have a fresh series of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. It is set to be Jaguar’s most fuel efficient car and should be built to meet even stricter EU pollution guidelines in the future.

The Jaguar Crossover model is part of the same X760 project and will use the same platform, but with four-wheel drive capacity and space for a front differential. It will be a stylish soft-roader with a focus on luxury design and an innovative interior. A mix of design elements should see sports saloon comfort matched to a coupé-like cockpit, but with the functionality and safety of a four-wheel drive crossover.
