Future german saloons: Audi A4

Audi A4 2008After the upcoming Mercedes C-Class, let’s consider what Auto Motor und Sport has to say about the 2008 Audi A4.

As previously reported, the A4 is going to be the second Audi model based on the MLB system, after the A5 coupè next year. MLB is the german acronym for modular-length components, which should allow for more efficient production (+40%) and more aggressive “invisible” component sharing across the model range. The system will also enable Audi engineers to position the engine further behind, reducing the problems caused by having it in such a forward position in current A4s.

Another novelty will be the availability (against surcharge) of a magnetic suspension system that adapts the ride to the driving conditions.

The engine range starts lower than the C-Class’. The base engine is the 1,6-liter FSI (115 ps), then two-litre FSI, both naturally aspirated and turbo-charged (140, 170 and 200 ps). The S4 and RS4 will be coming later, to occupy the top of the range (the RS4 with up to 450 ps). Diesel engines should be the new common rail engines, starting with the 2.0 TDI (140 and 170 ps) and going up to the 3.0 TDI with 233 HP.
