The Australian magazine Wheels reports some declarations from Ulrich Bruhnke, responsible of the BMW M-Division, about future projects.
In brief: the next BMW M will be the M6 Convertible, which will be announced in a few months’ time. The M5 Touring should follow in 2007, then there might be an M-version of the X5 E70, which is at step 2 of the M development process (original idea, development of the idea, business case and, if approved, building of a prototype).
An X5-M prototype was buit some years ago, and was driven round the Nürburgring in 7′ 49″ but was never available to the public. Now, the presence rivals such as the ML 63 AMG and the Cayenne Turbo S might push BMW to develop the X5-M.
At the other end of the BMW range, bad news about the rumoured M1: the project would cost as much (if not more!) as the M3, but the commercial return would be more uncertain and the 130i already is powerful enough to keep up with rivals such as the Golf R32 or the upcoming Audi S3.
