In announcement likely to happen tomorrow, Saab will sign a purchase agreement with BMW for engine supply, with the new Saab 9-3 to be released in 2012 getting BMW engines under the bonnet. While the deal has not been officialised, a press conference and announcement will probably occur tomorrow.
The Saab 9-3 should get new BMW engines and the Saab 9-2 entry-level premium car could use the Mini Countryman platform. The rumours also include other possible partnerships and deals to be announced tomorrow, but otherwise it seems like it could be a positive development for the newly Spyker-purchased Saab brand. The optimism has been reflected in a 36-percent jump in the Spyker share price value.
The deal should pave the way for development of the Saab 9-2 super mini car. Not only is it a nostalgic representation of the classic Saab 92 model of the 1950’s, it should also prove to be a good entry-level model for Saab in a segment that is of increasing interest for consumers. Plans would be to prepare the Saab 9-2 for a 2014 launch, but Spyker has revealed it would need another partner to help develop the model.
A BMW deal would be a good revenue generator for the German company, while Saab would get the opportunity to revive and develop its product range under its new owner. A Saab-BMW deal would also be a good fit for the two companies and possibly the only way for Saab to get its new products underway.
