Toyota is having a tough time of it at the moment and the announcement of its new focus on quality is not really doing it for us right now. Why? Because it has been couched in terms of a new design direction rather than anything concrete about quality control procedures. Toyota is planning to pursue more ‘European’ design cues as in its own words - European customers are more demanding and so what works there will work elsewhere, too.
A new front end and overall ‘family feeling’ will define the new direction and interior design will take a step up in quality. It’s part of a new global product philosophy and despite our doubts that it will go deeply beyond the surface, it looks like Toyota is taking a step in the right direction to improve its image and possibly its product offering along the way.
Toyota has always been known for providing reliable vehicles and the recent huge recall move on some of its models hit the company right in the centre of what was supposed to be their calling card. A new Europen-look Toyota could help to win back some of the faith lost and maybe even put a dent in Volkswagen’s bid for world domination. We’ll be interested to see what these new cars look like when they finally get out on the market.
