Auto Bild has a nice article on the next BMW 5-Series (project number F10), expected in 2009. The looks should be a mix: an evolution of the current 5-Series mixed with some elements of the 3-Series E90.
Auto Bild expects BMW to manage a slight weight reduction for the F70, while it’s expected to grow a bit (+10 mm length, +18 mm wheelbase, +4 mm width and -13 mm height). It seems that BMW might manage to reduce the front overhang notwithstanding the new pedestrian crash protection requirements. Rear-axle dynamics are expected to be improved. BMW might alsooffer hydraulic suspensions on the next 5-series.
The gasoline engine range is expected to include: 520i, 2.5 liters, 218 ps; 525i, 3.0 liters, 238 ps; 530i/xi, 3.0 liters, 272 ps; 535i/xi, 3.0 liters biturbo, 306 ps; 540i, 4.8 liters, V8, 367 ps; 550i/xi, 4.4 liters V8 biturbo, 408 cv (!!!). Obviously this data is provisional, and might be revised upwards if german competitors get too pesky with their engine range over the next years.
Now, the diesel engine range: 520d, 2.0 liters, 175 ps; 525d, 2.5 liters, 204 ps; 530d/xd, 3.0 liters, 245 ps; 535d/xd, 3.0 liters, 300 ps.
Finally, the next M5 is expected in 2010 and its V10 engine might grow a bit, both in capacity and in power output.
BMW is also working on fuel-consumption and emissions reduction: an urea-injection system, a regenerating braking system and a stop-start system to automatically switch off the engine during short stops.
