Volkswagen has now announced prices and specifications for the Golf R Cabriolet that will be sold in UK dealerships from the spring. The new car is the first R model with a folding roof. Like the Golf R that it’s based on, the convertible is powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged engine mated to a six-speed DSG gearbox. There’s 261 hp on tap, which is 5 hp less than the hatchback but 53 hp more than the convertible GTI.
A 0 to 62 mph time of 6.4 seconds is claimed by VW which makes it the quickest VW convertible ever built. Unlike the hatchback, there is no four-wheel drive system in the convertible which helps the hatch manage a time 0.9 seconds quicker. The lack of four-wheel drive means that the convertible’s figures of 33.6 mpg and emissions of 195g/km are a slight improvement over the hatch.
Visually there are no differences from the hardtop version, so the aggressive bumper at the front with LED running lights and the sculptured bumper at the rear with twin mid-mounted exhausts mark out the R variants from other Golfs. The sports suspension makes it 25mm lower than the Golf Cabriolet and the brake callipers are coloured in the signature blue used on the exterior of the car in our images.
The ‘R’ logos embroidered on the leather seats and the pedals made of brushed aluminium give the cabin the premium feel you’d expect for £38,770. The leather covered steering wheel and the paddle shift gear levers behind the wheel give a sporty feel and the fabric roof, which takes 11 seconds to raise, offers open air motoring but comes at a premium, as the Golf R Cabriolet costs £5,000 more than the hatchback.
