Mercedes aficionados are up in arms about the company’s latest advert calling it “tacky” as it’s not in keeping with the prestige brand’s image. The promo they are getting all het up about shows model Kate Upton washing her Mercedes CLA seductively. In the advert, the catwalk model wears a black vest and denim shorts, and is ogled by a group of men as she washes her car.
The commercial was commissioned for the American market and is linked to an advertising campaign that promises big things during the Super Bowl broadcast. According to reports, singer / songwriter Usher will be making an appearance in the video, which will be shown during the big match’s 4th quarter.
To some the advert is a little bit too desperate for attention, which seems unnecessary when the entry-level coupe has 208 hp and 200 ft-lb of torque. We could understand the need for this sort of advertising if the car was a dud, but the ‘baby CLS’, which was recently unveiled in Detroit, promises to generate lots of sales for the German marque without any need for promotion.
Although the car shares the platform with the A-Class, this is a coupe with sporty credentials with a tapered profile that is set to make it the most aerodynamically efficient Mercedes on offer when it’s launched in June. The top of the range CLA 45 will use the 2.0 litre turbocharged engine found in the A45 AMG, so a 0 - 62 mph time of 5.0 seconds and a top speed of 155mph should do enough to sell the car.
Perhaps Merc thought a model would be appropriate because the car will make its official public debut at Berlin Fashion Week later in the year.
