These images offer a glimpse of the future for the German marque that have led the way with Bluemotion technology in the past and continue to develop technologies that combine fuel efficient engines, low drag aerodynamics and technologies like engine stop/start.
The Volkswagen CrossBlue concept promises 306 horsepower and a 0-62mph time of 7.2 seconds. But those aren’t the figures that impress. The innovative diesel-electric motor is estimated to produce 35mpg combined or 89mpge in electric mode. Rivals like the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 can only manage a combined 19mpg. The fully charged lithium-ion battery can take the car 14 miles in all-electric mode but the top speed is reduced to 75mph to aid the economy. The overall range is 661 miles when the diesel and electric motors are combined.
The concept offers space for six adults to sit in comfort and promises a smooth ride and good all-round visibility. With ample headroom and plenty of different configurations for the seating, the concept promises to evolve into a production car that will be versatile enough to take sales from the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and the Mercedes ML450.
Unfortunately for those of us in the UK, even if the concept goes into production there are no plans for it to hit British showrooms as VW have designed it specifically for the North America market.
