Following on from last month’s spy shots, we can now reveal the shape the 2014 Lexus IS will take. Most of the details of the new car are being kept under wraps until the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, but these images have surfaced as a response to leaked low quality images that appeared on a Chinese website.
Technically there’s a lot to like about in the new car. Lexus have included electrostatic switches that just need a finger’s touch to operate the air conditioning and the cabin also benefits from a sportier driving position thanks to a repositioned steering wheel. This new position also improves the cabin for passengers in the back by giving them more space, and because the new generation IS has a longer wheelbase and a wider body, luggage capacity has also been increased.
You’re looking at the F Sport variant in these pictures, so the bigger wheels and aggressive front end will be toned down for lower spec models. The exact model range might not be part of the Detroit unveiling, but we understand that the current IS 250 and IS 350 designations will be used when the new shape saloon goes on sale.
Although there was no information from Lexus to accompany the photos, the purpose of the new look IS model is to reinvent the brand to give it a more dynamic image. We won’t know if they’ve been successful until we see the entry-level car, as most sporty saloons give off an energetic vibe no matter what the brand.
