BMW i3 Coupe Concept will be unveiled at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. The latest evolution of the i3 concept car now presents a sportier three-door body and an updated window styling, which BMW describes as a standard feature on the upcoming ‘i’ family. The drive system, the chassis and the energy storage unit are incorporated into the aluminium-made Drive module. The rear section and the alloy wheels have also been included in the restyling process, which clearly suggests the i3 is approaching its final preparation stages and will soon be ready to debut in showrooms.

The interior is also been revisited and although keeping the same structure of the previous i3, it offers details which are more in-line with the current BMW stylistic language: the instrument cluster is been replaced by two screens, one (6.5-inch) fitted behind the steering wheel and the other (8.8 in) on top of the dashboard. The i-Drive knob is located on the central tunnel.

BMW i3 Concept measures 3964 mm in length, 1768 mm in width and 1555 mm in height. The car looks more athletic and muscular than the 5-doors version, although the wheelbase is 2570 mm long on both cars. The Bavarian designers have modified the steepness of the windshield and the rear window, have fitted 20-inch alloy wheels on 155/60 front tyres and 175/55 rear tyres. BMW i3 Coupè is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor, which also provides traction via a single-speed transmission. The concept develops 170 hp and 250 Nm, and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 8 seconds, with a range between 130 and 160 kilometres.

A REx (range extender) unit is also available as optional, to meet the needs of those who must travel longer distances. Thanks to the position of the battery pack under the floor of the car, BMW engineers have been able to lower the centre of gravity and optimising weight distribution between the axles. The caroffers three driving modes: COMFORT, ECO PRO and ECO PRO+. ECO PRO+ mode is focused on fuel saving and limits the maximum speed to 90 km/h.
