New Volkswagen Passat spy shots and technology news

Posted: Friday 15 May 2009 by Alison

The new Volkswagen Passat is undergoing road testing, as seen in the spy shots outside of the Nurburgring track. The new model looks like it will arrive in a slightly larger version, with a more luxurious look.

According to some reports, the new Passat will adopt new technology, including extra-thin glass and new all wheel drive system to reduce weight and fuel consumption. The chassis will be reinforced, to garantee greater driving pleasure.

The engine range will be overhauled to included more efficient units with reduced emissions. A new 3.0 litre V6 petrol unit in 280 hp will appear, along with a Turbodiesel at about 3000cc and 300 hp. Eight speed DSG transmission should appear, and a hybrid version is also on the cards.

Special paint work will enable the car to change colour depending on the electric output (changing when on low voltage). The tyres will adopt an airless system, and a revolutionary system that cleans the windows without using wipers is also planned (don’t ask us how!). Further gadgets including an automatic parking system with video cameras and radar cruise control.

The debut date is still uncertain with some reports having the new Passat available in 2010, while a more realistic date has the debut at 2012. The new technology will require some testing and its unlikely that the Passat will be released ahead of its time.
