Porsche: no Cayman RS

Porsche Cayman RSA disappointment from Porsche: there will be no souped-up versions of the Cayman S.

While an hypothetical Cayman RS may well host the 3.8 liters boxer of the 997 Carrera S, or a turbo version of the Cayman S engine, a Porsche employee said declared to the dutch magazine Autotelegraaf that the firm “Cayman was designed for a position between the Boxster and the 911, both in price and in performance” and that its task is to tempt Boxster owners to upgrade or to steal sales from cars such as the BMW M3 or Mercedes CLK, not from her bigger sister.

Bah. Is that you you stay the most profitable car-builder in the world ? Or is that how you miss a nice opportunity ? I don’t think that Porsche would be unable to sell a Cayman RS at a price point that would guarantee the same (very generous!) profit margins as selling a 997 does.

What is certain is that Porsche will soon announce the base Cayman, with a less powerful engine and a lower price. And there’s always time to rethink a super-Cayman if cars such as the BMW Z4M or the next M3 start selling too much in proportion to the Cayman S.
