Yes, diesel engines have evolved a lot. So much we can even have sportscars with diesel engines, something that was not conceivable years ago. Volkswagen is one of the carmakers that make the most of these powerplants and the next way to demonstrate this will be the presentation of the sixth generation Golf in the GTD version. The car will have its world premiere at Auto Mobil International (AMI), in Leipzig, from March 28 to April 5.
The diesel engine that equips Golf GTD has managed to put two different worlds together: the high performance land with the kingdom of fuel efficiency. The 2-litre turbodiesel powerplant produces 170 bhp (125 kW) at 4,200 rpm and 350 Nm between 1,750 rpm and 2,500 rpm. In Golf GTD, this means a top speed of 222 km/h and a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 s with the dual-clutch manual automated transmission DSG. In terms of fuel consumption, the car can run 17.9 km/l. Considering the fuel tank is able to hold 55 l of diesel, the car can run up to 982 km.
What differs GTD from other Golf versions are the 17-inch alloy wheels from the “Seattle” model, dual chrome exhaust escapes on the left side of a special air diffuser and chromed radiator horizontal stripes. Badges on the front grille and in the back of the car also present the future owner of this machine as a happy guy. And a wise one.
