Volkswagen has presented the new Polo at the Geneva show, in both the five door and Bluemotion Concept models. While the style is nothing to get excited about, Volkswagen has concentrated its efforts on safety, especially in the light of new EuroNCap norms.
All versions therefore, will be equipped with ESP. The five door Polo is 3.95 metres long and 1.68 metres wide (slightly larger than the previous model) and the boot has a variable capacity of 280 to 952 litres. The McPherson front suspension is completely new and the braking system has been updated.
The other important news regards fuel consumption, becoming the new catch cry for nearly all the manufacturers at the show. The new Polo is about 7.5 percent lighter and the engine range has been revolutionised with the arrival of new TDI and TSI models, along with the seven-speed, twin-clutch DSG transmission.
The diesel range is entirely based on the new 1.6 litre TDI with 75, 90 and 105hp. Fuel consumption drops to 4.2 l/100km with only 109 g/km of CO2 emissions. The Bluemotion Package further reduces those figures to 3.8 l/100km and 96 g/km.
The interior design is new but is clearly Volkswagen style, with quality materials and a soft touch. Twin colour finishes are available, while the console now includes the navigation system and climatronic. Optionals include day driving lights, side airbags (both front and back), satellite navigation system and panoramic roof.
The Bluemotion Concept (not to be confused with the Bluemotion Package mentioned above), has been presented, expected on the market in 2010. This version has a new three cylinder, 1.2 litre TDI engine at 75hp with Start-Stop system and record fuel consumption figures: just 3.3 l/100km and only 87 g/km of CO2 emissions. The weight comes in at 1080 kg, with a lowered base and 15-inch wheels.
Sales will start in Europe at the end of June, and the range will include the Trendline, Confortline and Highline versions.
