Many blogs have started recycling the (very old) news of the Volkswagen Sfero, a strange breed of VW crossover on a Maserati Quattroporte platform (with a transaxle gearbox and RWD!), that should have been a bridge between the Passat and the Phaeton.
In reality, plans for platform sharing between VW and Maserati have been scuppered a while ago, and VW has confirmed that it’ll try to position a CLS look-alike between Passat and Phaeton. This car should be the “Passat Coupè”, of which Auto Motor und Sport publishes a photoshop image and some details.
This coupè-saloon should look like a sleeker Passat, with a lower height (and less space inside). Engines will range from the 170 hp 1.4 TSI twin-charger to the 280 hp 3.6 VR6. The VR6 will be the top of the range engine, because Audi V8s can’t be mounted on the Passat Platform.
The Passat coupè should debut in 2008, alfter the Golf mk V Variant and the Golf SUV (link to Autoblog.it’s italian language coverage).
