Mazda has presented its new Mazda 3 Hatchback at the Bologna motor show. It could prove to be a strategic move in the Italian car market, as one in three Mazdas sold in Italy is a Mazda 3, with 26,000 sales of the previous model in Italy, and 1.8 million sold around the world.
The style is completele updated, with some elements taken from the Mazda 3 sedan version that was previously seen at the Los Angeles motor show. The aerodynamics have been improved and there has been an increase in dimension, with the car measuring 4.46 metres in length and 1.47 metres high. The overall weight has decresed by 15 kg, however, compared to the previous model, following the trend set by the Mazda 2.
The hatch includes front McPherson suspension and a new rear multilink suspension, while ABS, EBD and TCS traction control are included, together with DSC balance control. Optionals include the new RVM (Rear Vehicle Monitoring system) and adaptable bi-xeno headlights.
The new Mazda 3 has inherited some of its engine range from the Mazda 6. The 2.2L turbodiesel, Euro 5 with DPF filter is available in both the 185hp, 400Nm version, and the 150hp, 360Nm version (consumption at 5.6 and 5.3 litres/100km respectively, with CO2 emissions at 149 and 140 grams/km).
At the lower end of the scale we find the 1.6L MZ-CD engine at 109hp and 240Nm of torque, with excellent consumption of only 4.5 litres/100km and 119 grams/km of CO2 emissions. Among the petrol engines, on the cards for the future is an MPS turbo compressor, but currently available is a two-litre MZR at 150 hp and 187 Nm, and 1.6L at 105hp, capable of consumption at 6.3l/100km and 149 g/km of CO2 emissions.
The interior includes a brand new design, but with the essential sports style of a Mazda. The dash includes a new navigator screen and multifunctional display. Both the design and driving position give a good impression, although Mazda appears to have chosen an economic upholstery in grey-black.
The increase in the size of the seats is notable, giving the impression of a comfortable car, and an optional extra available is electronic seats. Other elements include softer plastics used, the possibility of bluetooth connection for cell phones, and specific plug-ins for audio accessories.
