Mercedes has in store a facelift for the E Class in 2006, which will include a workover in the reliability departement. In 2009 a completely new E Class will follow, according to Auto Motor und Sport.
An important change will be the shape of the 4 headlights: no more will they be round, they will be shaped like squarish teardrops. If we can believe AMS’ sketches, the look of the new E Class will be more aggressive, taking something from the CLS but without going to extremes. The flank of the car suffers from the usual creeping up of sheetmetal, while glass surfaces get smaller and smaller. The wheel rims will have to be at least 18″ not to disappear on the backdrop of these expanses of steel …
The new E Class will be exactly as long as the old one, but the wheelbase will gain 20 mm. The longer wheelbase and a rearrangement of the interior should result in a sensibly roomier cockpit.
The electronics will be (mostly) inherited from the new S-Class, except for some “treats” that will be reserved for the bigger model, to preserve its exclusivity.
The gasoline engines will range from a turbocharged 1.8 liter (175 hp) to an engine with (almost) triple that power, the 515 hp 6.3 V8 AMG. The choice of a turbo-charger over the super-charger is due to its lower weight.
