At this stage, we recommend getting yourself your own test drive on the Golf VI, as the mixed reaction among the experts, from Autocar and iMotorMag, are making things a little confusing. This car should be one of the stars of the moment, so what are we expected to think about it?
Autocar was a little underwhelmed by this latest generation Golf, saying it had more the feeling of a “baby executive” than a “sparky hatch”. While some design elements were appreciated, including the chassis and engine choice, Autocar’s conclusion remained:
It looks like being an ideal car to downsize into, and should handle long distance journeys at a stride, but only we get it onto UK roads will we be able to gauge the true extent to which ultra-refinment has robbed the Golf of its zest.
The guys at iMotorMag were more generous, being equally impressed by the incredibly quiet interior. They gave it a 4.5 stars out of five, an excellent result we would say. They like the interior, and especially the 1.5 litre TSI engine at 160hp.
For a complete idea of their test drive, check out this video from iMotor. The only weak spots with this car appear to be exactly what was supposed to differentiate it from the fifth generation - a design too similar to be appreciated and the technical base that could have done with an overhaul.
