Rumours of the Fiat 500 cabrio started to circulate even before the launch of the sedan, on July 2007, exactly 50 years after its unforgettable parent. Before yesterday though, we still hadn’t seen any photographic proof of its existence, despite it’s arrival on the market generally being taken for granted.
With these spy shots, any doubts about the roof are entirely removed as we see that it will be a soft-top, fabric roof that is closer to a targa style, rather than a full cabriolet. There are a number of reasons behind this choice.
Firstly, this targa choice means a re-design of the body work is unnecessary, maintaining the car’s balance and rigidity as they are. This is also a nostalgic operation as Fiat plays another card after the success of the hard top revival, in keeping to the original old-style.

In addition this should be a novelty in a glamorous and often snooty segment of small cabriolets. If Mini makes a cabrio, well, you’ve got to make one too, but somehow keep some of the “urban chic” to yourself and hold onto the originality of the product.
