General Motors is turning 100 and for the occasion has elected the best ten cars ever produced by the brands it currently owns. And plenty of surprises in the list are to be had.
Who would have thought, for example, that the Saab 92 from 1950 would have come out on top of the more showy first series Chevrolet Corvette or the Pontiac GTO from ‘64? Or that the Chevy Bel Air from 1955 would have to content itself with seventh place?
The cars in the list represent the future developments of the Detroit company: on one hand smaller and more humble vehicles, on the other supercars and innovative models such as the Cadillac V16 from 1930 or the first car that had electronic ignition.
Considering the difficult in choosing only ten cars that represent 100 years of production, we give you the list to make up your own mind. Any additions are welcome!
We offer a couple ourselves: the Corvette C3 from ‘68 (the Mako Shark famous for its splendid design), and the Oldsmobile Toronado from ‘66 which was the first rear wheel drive for America if we exclude the experimental Cord L-29 from 1937 and a Ruxton model that appeared a couple of months after.
The General Motors list is as follows:
1. Saab 92, 1950
2. Pontiac GTO, 1964
3. Chevrolet Corvette, 1953
4. GM EV1, 1996
5. Opel Olympia, 1936
6. LaSalle, 1927
7. Chevrolet Bel Air, 1955
8. Cadillac V16, 1930
9. Cadillac Model 30, 1910
10. Cadillac Model 30 (with electronic ignition), 1912
