Fiat Oltre

So. The “Oltre Fiat” (”Beyond Fiat”). Excess is the keyword, for this concept car which could be a precursor for an Italian rival for the Hummer, derived from the Iveco LMV (Light Multirole Vehicle), an offroad vehicle much appreciated by the armed forces of several countries.

It is 4,87 m long, 2,05 m high and 2.2 m high, with a 3.23 m wheelbase. The tires are really “beyond” (Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico 315/40R26 XL) as is the ground clearance (50 cm).

The engine is a bit weak: an Iveco F1C common rail diesel, with a variable geometry turbocharger. It’s a 3 liter 4 cylinders inline with 185 hp and 456 Nm of torque at 1.800 rpm. Automatic gearbox with six gears. Top speed “beyond” 130 km/h. Maybe, to have a hope of really competing with the Hummer they should build an 8V made with two of these engines …

“Oltre Fiat” press release

The “Oltre Fiat” show car was presented today at the Bologna Motor Show in a spectacular display; this unique model confirms the Fiat Group’s technological excellence even in the large four-wheel drive and off-road segment.

It is derived from the Iveco LMV (Light Multirole Vehicle), the new military off-road vehicle that embodies cutting edge technical features and has won the FCLV (Future Command and Liaison Vehicle) contract for the British Army, also being chosen by the Italian Army.

The show car has very generous external dimensions: it is 4,870 mm long, 2,050 mm tall, 2,200 mm wide and has a wheelbase of 3,230 mm. It has “exuberant” styling, developed around a silhouette with straight wheelarches that cut across the uncluttered sides. The door handles have been recessed deliberately, so that they do not constitute an obstacle when driving off-road. In other words, the design concept underlines the car’s practical personality, which is taken to an extreme by the vehicle’s real performance.

The Crew-Cab version (long cab with an open platform) achieves a perfect balance between the feeling of dominating the terrain from inside the comfortable cab, and the Spartan personality of a pure expedition Pick-up. The tubular structure above the cab enhances the solidity of the whole vehicle, focusing attention on the presence of a complete rollover bar inside the cab. And finally, the adjustable sunshade at the top of the windscreen increases the dynamism of the roof, and recreates the typical structure of vehicles used for desert crossings. The Oltre-Fiat clearly embodies power and solidity, having inherited all the features peculiar to the military model, starting from the permanent 4×4 transmission that allows it to tackle any situation or route. The merit also goes to the generous 50 cm ground clearance, and the highly efficient independent suspension system with coil springs and coaxial dampers.

The vehicle’s extraordinary capacity as an “explorer” is also enhanced by the fact that all-wheel drive is engaged automatically when it is needed. All three differentials lock, a system that guarantees optimal wheel grip in all conditions. Thanks to these solutions, the Oltre Fiat can negotiate a lateral gradient of up to 40%, and longitudinal gradients of 80%; it can also tackle fords of up to 85 cm, and this can be increased to 1.5 metres by mounting special inlet and exhaust pipe extensions. And finally, the show car is fitted with high performance, ultra sporty (V speed code), low profile Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico 315/40R26 XL (Extra load) tyres.

The vehicle on show in Bologna can therefore perform a wide range of functions; it is equipped with an Iveco F1C Common rail diesel engine, with a variable geometry turbo and intercooler. The 3-litre engine has 4 cylinders in line and delivers a maximum power output of 136 kW (185 bhp) at 3700 rpm, and peak torque of 456 Nm at 1800 rpm. Combined with a six-speed automatic transmission, the engine gives this extraordinary vehicle a top speed of over 130 km/h.

And finally, the Oltre-Fiat show car weighs about seven tonnes, ready for the road and exploiting all its load capacity. It can seat four or five people, depending on the interior outfit, with an overall payload of about three tonnes.

Fiat thanks the following organisations for their collaboration in the development of the Oltre Fiat show car: RRS (vehicle outfit), Pirelli (tyres), Sabelt (seats) and Alpine (audiovisual systems).

Oltre Fiat SUV Concept Unveiled in Bologna Holy Italian Hummer, Man of Bat. Fiat’s new Oltre Fiat concept, unveiled today at the Bologna auto show, either foreshadows a new competitor for the largest luxury SUVs, or is the punchline of a complex joke involving a team…

The Fiat will never be better than the legendary HUMMER H1. I see the Fiat as a wonna be version of the great Hummer. Fiat has tried so hard to copy the sleek looks of the Hummer H2 SUT while trying to replicate the interior of the H1. The Fiat will never even get close to the Hummer H1 seeing as the Hummer has no competition and will always be the ultimate go any where off road vehicle in the world. It will never be a suitable military vehicle.

Besides the styling, that resembles more the original Lamborghini LM002 (from were the well-known Hummer took the design!) actually the Fiat it is a far superior offroder then the old and obsolete H1! (I am not even taking in consideration the H2 or H3 because are just commercial operation of GM and they are vehicles base on their SUV frames like the Tahoe for the H2. The Fiat Oltre is a prototype or studio, over the excellent LMV from Iveco that have been tested and purchased from several states for their army. The engine it is a modern 4 cylinder that out perform the old generation diesel V8 of the H1 under any aspect. AM General started making High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles for the U.S. Army in 1983 and started the design of the first prototype in 79 called M998! On January 2, 1985, AM General rolled the first HMMWV (aka. HUMMER) off the assembly line of their new South Bend facility. The first HMMWV was a standard Military vehicle. So if Fiat copy some thing just copy the original and unique Lamborghini 4×4 more famous under the LM002 name, that was coming under testing 4-5 years before the Hummer did! in. Lamborghini first prototype was the Cheetah and was presented in 1977 to the US army in California
    Some hints…

    http://www.lamborghiniregistry.com/Cheetah/index.html

Most of the time the thru it is hidden behind false legends…
Like many other forgotten Italian offroder like the Fissore magnum 4×4 based on a WM90 Iveco frame and gears, that have been much ahead of the time and the competition when presented in 84 and prefigured all the ideas in design on what modern SUV are today 23 years later.

well if the Fiat is a similar design to the lamborghini LM002 (a.k.a lamborghini Rambo) it will fail just as bad. The only reason the Hummer was requested, was because the Rambo failed the durability test. They broke down way too much in the feild and the military couldn’t take the risk. The H1 proved to be far superior to the rambo in durability and mobility, hence became to USA military vehicle.

I can not see how the Fiat could possible be superior to the H1, sure the Fiat my be a larger vehicle, but size is nothing, its strength. The onlt thing that is better about the Fiat is the extra 10cm ground clearance, which could easy be achieved by fitting a H1 with larger tyres. Also the Fiat is claimed to be light, it weights over 7 tonnes.

Also Ale is mistaken about the engine comparison between the H1 and Fiat. The Fiat is only running a 3 litre 4 cylinder diesel with a turbo. This engine produces 185 hp and 456nm of torque. The H1 Alpha is now running a 6.6 litre Duramax Diesel V8 with a central mounted turbo (the most powerful diesel V8 in it’s class). This baby produces 300hp and 700nm of torque, so im sorry to say Ale, the Fiat’s 4 cylinder engine can not out preform the H1’s V8 under any aspect

What is it a Rambo????? Cheetah was the name of the Lamborghini prototypes.
Stallone it is an other story .

The only thing that was failing was the American engine that they try to fit in it for obvious reasons in the first prototypes. I actually doubt that the Army would have got some Italian V12cyl with 450hp.At list would have probably be a lot of fun for the militars! Please do not be ridiculous and compare a Lambo LM002 and a Hummer diesel or with the 6.0 vortec gasoline engine.
Beside that only recently they adopt for the Hummer a more modern turbo diesel V8 that you are mentioning, power it is not the only important thing in a vehicle but also the efficiency of the transmission and the rest of the project. You can often see cars with more power that are bitten by far less powerful (on the paper) vehicles but more efficient. Considering also that I drove a militar Hummer on the road (what a waist) and offroad ….I can assure you that it is not difficult to create something better!
By the way I recently drove as well only on the street a more refined civil version with the upgraded engine GM gasoline . Not a big difference. Vibrations, wind noise, tire noise, drivability not better than a rise field tractor with iron wheels, driving position (against any coherent thinking) visibility, etc.. ect.. are just confirming that it is an obsolete machine that have been build for specific work like towing and some specific type of off road. Sure the American army it is not so happy as well since they are looking some were else to quickly replace them…..
Also look at the weight of the Duramax engine, with the automatic transmission and take away already a good 15% of the power that the engine have to spend to carry it self compare to the Iveco setup.
    Ciao
