	<p>Audi will collaborate with Japanese giant Sanyo in the planning of hybrid technology for the next generation VAG group cars. Until now the Volkswagon group has invested in streamlining internal combustion engines, first diesel then petrol, reaching levels of excellence while also delaying the release of hybrid models that other competitor companies are already realising.</p>
	<p>To make up for this, they&#8217;re relying on the experience of Sanyo, especially so as to not limit hybrid models to niche cars such as the SUV Audi Q7 and the Volkswagon Tuareg. It&#8217;s possible that the first models to benefit from this new technology will be the <a href="http://www.autoblog.it/post/13587/vw-up-anticipazioni-sulla-versione-di-serie/">Volkswagen Up!</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.it/post/13472/audi-a1-aumenta-la-produzione-prevista/">Audi A1</a>.</p>

<p>Even though the European automotive press was taking for granted the future existence of the Audi R4, it now seems that it may remain a paper dream.</p>
<p>Audi, who had not previously excluded the possibility of a small sports car with mid-mounted engine, has reportedly stated via a PR representative that the company does not currently have any plans to construct a car such as the R4. &#8220;It was never in the production program&#8221;, the spokesperson said.</p>
<p>Thinking carefully about the R4 (which would be placed halfway between the TT and the R8), it would be one of the main competitors for the new Cayman and the Boxster: so, after the R8, Audi would find itself selling a car in the same orbit as Porsche.</p>
 <p>Moreover, given the flurry of news surrounding the future plans of the company from now until 2012 (which was foreseen as the year of the R4) it seems that this shy denial is more a strategy to tease the press and create media interest around the model.</p>
<p>There are also many rumours surrounding the &#8220;baby R8&#8243; whose commercialisation would be conducted in competition with the Cayman, having the similarity of the alluminium frame; they would be different in their mechanics with the Audi having all-wheel drive (that could, however, eventually be seen on the Cayman). The parallel development of the two cars should guarantee the manufacturers much lower production costs.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s well to consider then that should the R4 lure some customers away from the smaller Porsche car, profits will finish in the same pockets without creating friction or competition. The desire of the new Porsche owners (shareholders of the VW group) to move Audi up to a higher level compared to the other brands of the VW group means that Stockholm should soon be interacting at a technical level with its Ingolstadt cousin.</p>
<p>Is the new all-wheel drive with Haldex predicted for the restyling of the 997 Carrera 4 and 4S, and the new six-cylinder box with FSI direct injection the first sign of this partnership?</p>

<p>Car Magazine has developed a similar look to the above rendering for the <a href="http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Secret-new-cars/Search-Results/Spyshots/Audi-R8-Spider-revealed/">nuova Audi R8 Spider</a>, expected for next year. &#8220;Engineering&#8221; reasons mean that it is likely to be equipped with a &#8220;Targa&#8221; roof of removable panels, rather than a more classic soft top or a foldable metallic roof. These difficulties are attributed to the position of the engine which means creating a space for the roof would be too complicated. Two &#8220;speedster&#8221; headrests are being considered for the seats.</p>
<p>Regarding possible engine specs, we can expect a similar range to the coupè: the current V8 4.2 with 420 hp, a V10 petrol decidedly more powerful (while the RS6&#8217;s V10 twin-turbo has been discarded due to its <a href="http://www.autoblog.it/post/11422/audi-conferma-erano-delle-r8-v10-biturbo-quelle-bruciate-al-nurburgring/">&#8220;incendiary&#8221; propensions</a>) and the future <a href="http://www.eurocarblog.com/post/685/audi-the-r8-v12-tdi-will-remain-shelved-but-a-smaller-diesel-is-on-its-way">V8 4.2 TDI</a> at 326 hp. Pricing should be about 12,000 euro more than the closed version.</p>

<p>We&#8217;re curious to know how the news was received around the Ingolstadt traps. <a href="http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/news/auto_-_produkte/hxcms_article_511086_13987.hbs">Auto, motor und sport</a> has announced today that if the news is true (and it comes from a reputable source) Audi&#8217;s rivals will be in a league of their own. And this after Audi has only just revealed the <a href="http://www.autoblog.it/post/12836/ginevra-2008-la-audi-q7-v12-tdi-di-serie/">new 6.0 V12 TDI</a>, soon to be under the hood of the SUV Q7.</p>
<p>Audi risks portraying an image inconsistent with the &#8220;ecology&#8221; with which car companies have become obssessed over recent years. Neither the 4.4 V8 BMW nor the 4.0 V8 Mercedes will have heirs, being considered too big and polluting, according to the German companies. The units will be substituted with new six cylinder concepts, characterised by lower capabilities (around three litres) and drastically reduced consumption and CO2 emissions.</p>
<p>&#8220;The 4.4 V8 will be substituted by a straight-six cylinder twin-turbo&#8221;, Norbert Reithofer, General Manager BMW has revealed, underlining that they haven&#8217;t changed their tune for the current range. A similar discussion regards Mercedes, who in addition to exchanging the V8 will also gradually substitute the 3.0 V6 CDI with a 2.1 four cylinder twin-turbo. This engine is expected to debut next year on the C250 CDI in a version that will have both 204 hp and 480 Nm. Following will be versions taking a step further for higher power.</p>

<p>Some updates on the Audi A4 destined for the US market: with availability in October the Ingolstadt vehicle will have a new 2.0 TFSI engine, increased to 211hp, 11 more than currently in use on many VAG models, with 350 Nm of torque.</p>
<p>The two-litre car will be equipped with the modern Audi Valvelift system controlling distribution and allowing the sedan a 0-60 miles (0-96 km/hr) in just 6.5 seconds. Combined with the engine - presented on the Avant at the American debut - it will be possible to choose as optional extras the <a href="http://www.autoblog.it/post/13157/tecnica-audi-s-tronic-7-marce/">double clutch, S tronic shift</a>.</p>
<p>Management is also considering the introduction of a 3.0-litre V6 TDI for the American market. After Mercedes, <a href="http://www.autoblog.it/post/13078/mercedes-con-la-tecnologia-bluetec-il-diesel-sbarca-negli-states/">that with its BlueTEC presented itself in great pomp</a> to American customers, another German manufacturer is betting on diesel to reinforce its presence in the US.</p>

<p>We had already reported the <a href="http://www.autoblog.it/post/13107/audi-r8-v12-tdi-sara-prodotta-o-no">rumours</a> regarding doubts about the production of the Audi R8 V12 TDI seen at <a href="http://http://www.autoblog.it/post/12080/detroit-2008-audi-r8-v12-tdi-concept/">Detroit</a> and then in <a href="http://www.eurocarblog.com/post/619/geneva-2008-audi-r8-tdi-le-mans">Geneva as &#8220;Le Mans&#8221;</a>. And it appears that there was a basis to the doubts as for the moment the R8 turbodiesel will remain a concept car. Underneath there were some who, believing it blasphemous to put a diesel engine on Ingolstadt&#8217;s sports car, hoped that this development would perhaps never occur.</p>
<p>But whoever is breathing a sigh of relief will have to tone down the joy as the interest raised at both shows means Audi has decided to go ahead with an R8 diesel. It&#8217;s a painful thing for the purists as while a 6.0 V12 was seen as out-of-character, what can be said about the adoption of a 4.2 V8 TDI of &#8220;only&#8221; 326hp for the company&#8217;s sports model? What is the &#8220;vulgar&#8221; Q7&#8217;s engine doing on this car?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s of little comfort to know that we&#8217;re getting close to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.it/post/11174/audi-r8-spider-photoshop/">roadster version</a>, as revealed by production manager Michael Dick. At this point we&#8217;re really curious to know what effect will be had by a R8 Roadster 4.2 V8 TDI&#8230;</p>

<p>Audi officially launches the S tronic 7-speed gearbox, a new double clutch robotized transmission that can be coupled with longitudinally mounted engines, with the Quattro four-wheel drive system. This new S tronic transmission can also handle up to 550 Nm of torque, meaning it can be coupled to engines such as the 3.0 V6 TDI or the 4.2 V8 engine of the S5. Or the 4.2 V8 of the RS4, for that matter, since it can handle engines revving up to 9,000 rpm!</p>
<p>The transmission spread is 8:1, meaning it can both accomodate extremely sporty shifts low in the range and  long ratios for cruising. More details in the full text of the press release below the fold. No details yet on which models will first feature this new S tronic gearbox.</p>

<p>Seven gears that shift at lightning speed without interrupting traction – Audi presents a new phase in the evolution of transmission systems. The seven-speed S tronic combines its dynamic working method with high efficiency. The new twin-clutch transmission is designed to work with longitudinally installed engines and the quattro all-wheel drive system, and its 550 Nm torque capacity makes it suitable for a wide range of sporty models. Audi will introduce the new S tronic into multiple model lines in series production during the course of this year.</p>
<p>With the seven-speed S tronic, Audi is launching a new phase in its drive strategy.  The new transmission, which was developed entirely by Audi, is intended for the mid-range model lines. Audi has designed it to be sporty while also being a highly efficient high-tech component.</p>
<p>Audi drivers can use the new seven-speed S tronic in various modes. The fully automatic mode, in which the computer selects the gear, keeps the D (Drive) and S (Sport) programs available. The gears can also be manually switched with the shift selector lever or with the optional rocker switch on the steering wheel – an amazingly fast process.</p>
<p>The new high-tech transmission from Audi gives the driver a dynamic and comfortable sense of shifting with unsurpassed precision and perfection. It combines outstanding economy with superb agility and potential for sporty driving.</p>
<p>The seven-speed S tronic is composed of two transmission structures. It integrates two multidisk clutches that control different gears. The large K1 clutch located on the outside conducts the torque via a solid shaft to the gear wheels for the odd gears 1, 3, 5 and 7. They are located in the rear of the cast-aluminum transmission housing, toward the center of the vehicle.</p>
<p>A hollow shaft rotates around the solid shaft. It is connected to the smaller K2 clutch, which is integrated into the inside of its larger sibling, and which controls the gear wheels for the even gears 2, 4 and 6, as well as reverse gear. All gear wheels are located in a single row on both drive shafts, in the order 4, 6, 2, R, 1, 3, 7 and 5.</p>
<p>Both transmission structures are continuously active, but only one is powered at a time by the engine. For example, when the driver accelerates in third gear, the fourth gear is already engaged in the second transmission structure – lying in wait, so to speak. The switching process takes place as the clutch shifts – while K1 is opening, K2 closes at lightning speed. This process takes only a few hundredths of a second and is completed without interrupting traction. It is so comfortable and smooth that the driver hardly notices it.</p>
<p>The power flows from the drive shaft to the self-locking center differential of the quattro drivetrain, which distributes it into two directions. In the basic distribution, 60 percent of the torque flows over the cardan shaft to the differential for the rear axle, and 40 percent flows over a side shaft to the bevel gear of the front-axle differential. Because this shaft is installed at a 7.2 degree angle, it uses a slanted, beveloid gear. To reduce weight, it is also hollow.</p>
<p>The asymmetric-dynamic power distribution provides sporty and agile driving characteristics with slight emphasis on the rear end.  When needed, the center differential can deliver up to 85 percent of the power to the rear axle or a maximum of 65 percent of the power to the front axle.</p>
<p>Typical Audi: uncompromising quality</p>
<p>Each component of the new seven-gear S tronic attests to Audi’s innovative way of thinking and to the company’s uncompromising quality standards. Carbon-coated synchronizer rings ensure synchronization of unsurpassed quality and stability. The gears one through three and reverse are also designed as three-cone synchronizations.</p>
<p>Highly precise management of both multidisk clutches was one of the most important development goals. This was achieved in part with a compact pressure cylinder, electronically controlled rotation speed compensation and the use of an optimized coil spring package. This package of technology provides maximum precision and comfort at startup and shifting.</p>
<p>The transmission is managed by the so-called mechatronic module. This module involves a compact group of control units and hydraulic control valves that is integrated on the left of the transmission when facing the direction of travel. Its control concept allows the speed of the gear shifting process to vary and extremely precise control of the power necessary for the process.</p>
<p>The required control pressure is provided by an efficiently operating oil pump that is located next to the mechatronic module and is driven by a gear section. The oil pump is supported by a vacuum booster for cooling the twin clutch during starting. This allows the amount of oil pumped to be roughly doubled as needed without increasing power.</p>
<p>A unique feature of the seven-speed S tronic is its two separate oil systems. While the twin clutch, mechatronic module and oil pump are supplied by their own oil circuit with seven liters of automatic transmission fluid (ATF) oil, the wheelsets and the central and front-axle differential are lubricated with about 4.5 liters of hypoid gear oil. This separation allowed the development engineers to position all of the components ideally, without being forced to compromise by using a single lubricant.</p>
<p>Audi has designed the new seven-gear S tronic to provide both exhilarating driving and consistent economy. The new high-tech engine is notable for its very high efficiency. Its highly intelligent controls also allow economical driving in automatic mode. The maximum possible transmission-ratio spread of 8.0:1 allows a sporty, short transmission ratio for the first gear as well as an rpm-sinking, long ratio for the last gear. The seven-speed S tronic is designed for up to 9,000 rpm and can transmit torque of up to 55 Nm.</p>
<p>Vorsprung durch Technik: the history of S tronic</p>
<p>Audi has led the march in the field of transmissions for many years. The introduction of quattro all-wheel drive in 1980 was a milestone in the history of automotive technology. And the S tronic is a prime example of the company&#8217;s basic philosophy – “Vorsprung durch Technik.”</p>
<p>The first Audi with a twin-clutch transmission was produced way back in November 1985 – the Sport quattro S1, which was driven by Walter Röhrl and his copilot Christian Geistdörfer in the World Rally Championships. Röhrl, the finest rally pilot of his time, described his 350 kW (476 hp) sports car as “a formidable thing” and a “natural phenomenon” – and the high-tech transmission provided him with even more powerful performance.</p>
<p>The twin-clutch transmission, which was controlled electrically with a short touch control lever in the S1, could shift through its five gears at lightning speed. Because the traction was not interrupted, the turbocharger for the five-cylinder engine remained constantly pressurized – a bypass in the engine’s airways supported this effect. A twin-clutch transmission was also on board the S1 during training for Röhrl’s victorious storming of the peaks during the 1987 Pikes Peak mountain race in Colorado.</p>
<p>The S tronic is one of the most versatile solutions in Audi&#8217;s range of transmissions. In the spring of 2003, Audi introduced the technology in series production in the TT Coupe and Roadster, combined with the high-torque 3.2-liter V6 with 184 kW (250 hp). The ultra-compact twin-clutch transmission, designed for transverse installation with six gears, was the perfect complement to the powerful engine. TT pilots could use it in automatic mode or shift the gears by hand, either with the short shift selector lever or with rocker switches affixed behind the steering wheel.</p>
<p>In the past five years, the new technology in the TT and A3 has become firmly established – as dynamic high-tech alternatives to hand-shifting as well as being fully imbued with the positive attributes of a conventional geared automatic transmission. Due to its wide range of strengths, the S tronic is also available in the A3 with a TDI four-cylinder engine. By the end of 2007, Audi had produced 188,338 cars in both model lines with twin-clutch transmissions.</p>
<p>A wide-ranging program: the ideal solution for every need</p>
<p>Today, Audi has a wide-ranging portfolio of transmission technology options – five technologies with widely varying characteristics may now be selected to perfectly fulfill their specific range of applications. Aside from the sporty S tronic with six – and now seven – gears, Audi offers a classic manual transmission, an automatic R tronic, the comfortable tiptronic torque-converter transmission, and the versatile, continuously variable multitronic – at least two customized solutions are available for each model range. The common denominators among all of these transmissions are compact and light construction, high efficiency, precise functioning in extremely durable quality, and convenient and simple operation.</p>
<p>Manual shift transmissions are available in many of the model ranges, from the compact A3 to the A6, along with the TT, the Q7 and the R8; they are suitable for combination with front-wheel and quattro drives. In the A4 and A5 model lines, Audi has introduced a new generation of transmissions that are notable due to modified positioning of the differential and for their greatly reduced internal friction, which further improves efficiency. Most manual transmissions operate with six gears. In the A3 1.9 TDI e and A3 Sportback 1.9 TDI e, five-gear transmissions are used in which the upper gears feature a somewhat longer gear ratio – which helps sink consumption on average to an exemplary 4.5 liters of diesel per 100 km (52.27 mpg).</p>
<p>The sequential-shift R tronic with six gears is reserved exclusively for the R8; as befits the character of a supercar, the engineers have designed it to be especially dynamic. In the R tronic, hydraulic units manage activation of the gears and clutch, and the driver’s commands are transmitted electronically.</p>
<p>The tiptronic transmissions from Audi are found in all sedan model lines, from the A3 to the A8, as well as in the high-performance Q7 SUV, in combination with front-wheel or quattro drive. The great strength of this classic torque-converter transmission is in its highly convenient shifting. In order to improve this even further while also improving efficiency, in the latest configuration, engineers have modified the damping system in the torque converter.  In addition, gear shifting is completed more swiftly.</p>
<p>The redesigned multitronic also features even greater efficiency and dynamics. The continuously variable transmission from Audi combines the advantages of manual gear shifting with the strengths of an automatic. As an especially comfortable driveline, the multitronic available in the A4, A5, A6 and A8 is paired with front-wheel drive. The new seven-gear S tronic developed by Audi, which will be introduced in series production in multiple models during the course of this year, is combined with quattro technology – Audi has designed it as a sporty and highly efficient high-tech transmission.</p>

<p>The German company&#8217;s net profits in 2007 amounted to 1.692 million euro, according to the organization&#8217;s annual report. Although the really surprising detail is the increase in percentage: in 2006 net earnings were 1343 million euro, which means that in 12 months Audi increased its profit margin by 26%. Return on investment increased from 14.2 to 18.6%.</p>
<p>Discussing the figures were Rupert Stadler (Audi Chairman) and Axel Srotbek (Board Member for Finance), according to whom Audi is not just beating a new company record for earnings, but is also cementing its place as a brand of automobile with one of the highest earnings.</p>
<p>The success is due to increased sales (more than 964,000 units, an increase of 6.4%), to new models such as the Q7, the A5, the TT and the R8, and the popularity of the brand in emerging markets other than the traditional European ones.</p>

In addition the company is currently investing about two billion euro every year in the development of new products. This should guarantee the passage from the current 25 models to about 40 for 2015, a year in which Audi is ambitious to produce 1.5 million vehicles.</p>
<p>Stadler also took a jab at BMW, that has underway a large body of <a href="http://www.autoblog.it/post/11787/bmw-in-vista-8000-licenziamenti/">lay-offs</a>. &#8220;In contrast to other companies, we have created new jobs (about 600 new engineers hired in 2007) and we are creating more in 2008: 800 new graduates and more than 700 apprentices will be hired in addition to our current 53,347 employees. The success of our brand is due mostly to them.&#8221;</p>

<p>A new convertible A5 will be ready for the road come 2009. CEO Frank Dreves, speaking in the pages of &#8220;A.m.u.s&#8221;, gave details that the facilities at Neckarsulm will produce the new Audi cabriolet. There are no technical indiscretions either, regarding a possible hard-top roof (as seen in the latest generation BMW Series 3 cabrio, principle competitor); therefore it seems that the A5 for the moment will remain faithful to the fabric roof, to the advantage of weight and charm. More precise details are available for sales prospects though, at about 28,000 units each year.</p>
<p>This also thanks to a range of both petrol and diesel engines, diversified such as to satisfy every need, including the more sporty S and RS versions. Dreves also focused on how the company of four rings in 2008 is counting on a 6-10% growth and expansion in markets outside the EU. What remains less clear however is whether the A5 Cabrio will replace the current soft-top model of the A4, or whether the proposal (as confermed by the A5 Sportback compared to the A4 Avant) is a step-up in price, sporty style and prestige.</p>

<p>Audi will be showing the new R8 TDI Le Mans in Geneva: it&#8217;s another study with the 6.0 V12 TDI engine (500 ps/1,000 Nm), but this time it seems ready for production and this seems to be the assumption underlying the press release.</p>
<p>The red color is a much bolder choice compared to the silvers and arctic whites seen up to now on R8 show cars, almost as bold a statement as the Le Mans name, there to underline the victories in Le Mans of the R10 TDI in 2006 and 2007.</p>

The brand has often enough demonstrated its sporty character in its production cars, especially the six- and eight-cylinder 3.0 TDI and 4.2 TDI. Audi has also been writing a new chapter in its success story on the racetrack since 2006. The diesel engine in the R10 sports prototype won its very first endurance race at Sebring, Florida, when it was pitted against an entire field of gasoline-engined challengers. But its most crucial victories were surely in 2006 and 2007 in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, when it simply outclassed the international elite.</p>
<p>The V12 TDI race engine in the R10 produces over 650 hp from a displacement of 5.5 liters, giving it the potential for a top speed as high as 330 km/h (205.05 mph) depending on the gear ratios. Its power and sturdiness immediately impressed both fans and experts, who were impressed by its restrained noise level. Unusual for a race engine, this powerful Audi diesel makes barely more than a whisper.</p>
<p>Long traditions of motor racing and production technology complement each other at Audi. The FSI engine of the R10&#8217;s predecessor, the R8, captured five wins at Le Mans with a direct gasoline injection system. Audi is also looking to maximize the advantage by using the race-tested FSI principle in its production models. The latest examples of this are the V8 with high-revving concept in the RS 4 and the production version of the Audi R8.</p>
<p>The Drivetrain</p>
<p>The roadgoing version of the new V12 TDI is built at the Györ plant, in Hungary. And the R8 TDI Le Mans still has a massive 500 hp on tap. In developing the six-liter engine, it was a clear priority to integrate it into the current family of Audi V engines, of which many thousands of versions with 6, 8 and 10 cylinders have already been built – both gasoline and TDI.</p>
<p>Audi&#8217;s engineers were in an ideal position to use their experience building the racing engine to develop the road version. Like the other power units in this range, the distance between cylinder bore axes on the V12 TDI is 90 mm (3.54 in.). Yet its included angle is 60 degrees, not 90 degrees. This means no free inertial forces or mass moments of inertia can occur with the V12. The results are refined in every respect.</p>
<p>The 83.0 mm (3.27 in.) bore and 91.4 mm (3.60 in.) stroke produce a total displacement of 5,934 cc – just like the 3.0 TDI. At only 684 mm (26.93 in.) long, this large diesel engine is very compact and just 166 mm (6.54 in.) longer than the V8 TDI. This compact length is key to accommodating the V12 in the mid-engined Audi R8.</p>
<p>The V12 TDI crankcase is made from gray cast iron with vermicular graphite – a high-tech material referred to as GJV-450 that is already used on the V6 and V8 TDI engines. GJV-450, made by a patented casting process, is about 40 percent more rigid and 100 percent more fatigue-resistant than gray cast iron. This enabled the developers to make its walls thinner, cutting its weight by around 15 percent compared with conventional gray cast iron.</p>
<p>The two cylinder heads are each made from three main elements. These are a base section made from a high-strength aluminum alloy incorporating the intake and exhaust ports, an oil-bearing upper section, and a reinforcing ladder frame supporting the two camshafts.</p>
<p>The valves are actuated by low-friction roller cam followers; the compression ratio is 16.0:1. Map-controlled swirl variation of the combustion air has been adopted from the V6 and V8 TDI engines. This produces permanently optimized swirl concerning both emissions and high performance.</p>
<p>Ultramodern Injection Technology</p>
<p>As is the case in the Audi V engines, the no-maintenance chain drive is mounted at the back of the engine, where it occupies little space. Its layout has changed on the new V12 TDI. The camshafts&#8217; sprocket engages in an intermediate gear via which two Simplex chains drive the camshafts. Two more chains drive the oil pump and the two high-pressure pumps actuate the common rail injection system.</p>
<p>The two new dual-piston high-pressure pumps form part of the common rail injection system supplied by specialty manufacturer Bosch. The two pumps build up a pressure of up to 2,000 bar in the rails. The piezo injectors with eight-hole nozzles have also been fundamentally revised.</p>
<p>The high pressure distributes the mixture optimally throughout the combustion chamber. The result is that the ignition process is faster, more homogeneous and more acoustically refined. The more efficient combustion process also increases power output, cuts consumption and reduces pollutant emissions.</p>
<p>The current generation of so-called inline injectors makes effective use of the piezo effect: piezo crystals expand in a fraction of a millisecond when an electrical voltage is applied. The number of injection processes per operating cycle can be varied across a wide range thanks to piezo technology – reaching as many as five fuel injection operations in the case of the V12 TDI.</p>
<p>As well as the main injection, pilot and post injections are possible. Pilot injections tone down the acoustic harshness of the combustion process. Retarded post injections are designed specifically to increase the temperature of the exhaust gas, promoting regeneration of the two standard particulate filters.</p>
<p>The two turbochargers are located on the outside of the engine&#8217;s V, each of them supplying one bank of cylinders. Thanks to their variable turbine geometry, the full flow of exhaust gas always passes through the turbine, so the chargers respond slickly – even at low engine speeds – and operate very efficiently.</p>
<p>The two turbochargers, which generate up to 2.6 bar of boost pressure, play a crucial role in producing the huge torque of 1,000 Nm (737.56 lb-ft) that the V12 TDI maintains from 1,750 rpm to 3,000 rpm. In developing 368 kW (500 hp), the diesel achieves a specific output of 62.0 kW (84.3 hp) per liter displacement.</p>
<p>Two large intercoolers reduce the temperature of the compressed air. The V12 has a twin-pipe exhaust system with two particulate filters. The intake system is similar in structure with one air cleaner per cylinder bank, with an airflow meter behind it. Two control units, sharing the workload in a master/slave principle, manage events in the engine.</p>
<p>The Audi R8 TDI Le Mans already fulfills the Euro 6 emissions standard that is likely to take effect in 2014 and calls for sharply reduced nitrogen oxides. By also designing in ultra-precise fuel metering by the common rail system, Audi&#8217;s engineers have made full use of current clean diesel technology.</p>
<p>The heart of the system is a special catalytic converter downstream of the oxidizing catalyst and the particulate filter. The second component in the system is an additional tank containing an aqueous urea solution. Small quantities of the solution, known as &#8220;AdBlue,&#8221; are injected into the exhaust system. The hot exhaust gases break the solution down to form ammonia that splits the nitric oxides into nitrogen and water. The system remains effective for the entire service life of the vehicle.</p>
<p>The dynamic character of a sports car depends not just on its performance and torque; the transmission ratios have to be right too. In keeping with the character of a high-performance sports car with unbeatable torque potential, the transmission in the R8 TDI Le Mans has six manually operated gears.</p>
<p>The manual transmission is very compact in design. Together with the small-diameter double-plate clutch, this means it can be installed low down. The manual transmission has very short shift travel and utterly precise guiding of the shifter into the open gear lever gate. It is made from polished aluminum, has an agreeable feel and exquisite sports car looks.</p>
<p>Such a high-performance Audi also has quattro permanent all-wheel drive. In the case of this mid-engine sports car, power is distributed variably between the front and rear wheels from a starting ratio of 40:60 to optimize the handling.</p>
<p>The Design</p>
<p>The R8 TDI Le Mans with Brilliant Red bodywork looks even wider and more resolute than the core model. It shows its potential through its muscular proportions, accentuated wheel arches and even larger air apertures. The rhombus-pattern cover on the air inlets and outlets is the hallmark of Audi&#8217;s sporty top models and a familiar feature of the current RS generation.</p>
<p>Typical of the side view of the R8 is the sideblade. Much wider in the bottom third, it visually accentuates the engine&#8217;s position as well as acting as an enlarged air deflector.</p>
<p>The continuous aluminum spoiler lip that connects the front and rear diffusers with side air baffles below the enlarged sills also pays tribute to this version&#8217;s highly developed dynamic talents.</p>
<p>And yet the R8 is unmistakable for its powerful, elegant basic proportions. The selective but always precise use of lines is another typical Audi characteristic, as is the curved arc of the roof. One new aspect is the glass roof of the passenger compartment with two large transparent sections. These, together with the glazed engine compartment behind, create a radically new formal element. The unmistakable NACA duct in the middle of the roof is a functional detail that is normally reserved for racing cars. Its ingenious shape accelerates the air drawn in here for the two cylinder banks of the V12 TDI engine.</p>
<p>The V12 TDI is displayed as the beating heart of this sports car, like a work of art inside a large showcase. Its look, underscored by the air deflectors located beneath the restyled rear glass lid, differs clearly from its production counterpart. The engine can even be seen after dark, when white light-emitting diodes illuminate the engine compartment – as on the production R8 version. This &#8220;showroom&#8221; can additionally be fully lined in genuine carbon fiber, for a particularly exclusive look.</p>
<p>The continuous line running from the front apron across the wheel arches and flanks to the tail end, then back down the other side, is one of the latest design hallmarks of the Audi brand. This &#8220;loop&#8221; naturally encompasses the air apertures, the headlights and the taillights.</p>
<p>Unmistakable Face by Day and Night</p>
<p>The passion expressed through the elaborate design of the lights is another typical Audi trait. Nor is anyone likely to overlook this Audi sports car from behind: the LED taillights have a three-dimensional look that can’t be missed.</p>
<p>But the absolute highlight is the all-LED headlights of the study vehicle. With their lenses and reflectors, not only do these innovative light sources have a ground-breaking appearance, they also have an enormous functional advantage: LED light, with its color temperature of 6,000 Kelvin, resembles daylight much more closely than xenon or even halogen light. Better light means the driver will have much less fatigue when driving at night.</p>
<p>Ergonomic and Elegant</p>
<p>The interior&#8217;s design is as sporty and exclusive as the exterior: the characteristic element here is the monoposto – an expansive arc running around the steering wheel and instruments, connecting the driver to the car. The interior consequently picks up on the dynamism of the R8 TDI Le Mans and gives it tactile expression in a form that is accessible the moment you climb in.</p>
<p>The three-spoke sport steering wheel of course remains the focal point of the car&#8217;s controls. With a diameter of 365 mm (14.37 in.), it is both sportily compact and ergonomic in shape. The steering wheel rim has a flat lower edge. This is a further aspect of the auto racing feel in the Audi R8 TDI Le Mans, but one that also brings major functional benefits, facilitating entry and exit for the driver. The steering wheel is covered in fine Valcona leather, with a diecast magnesium core providing strength.</p>
<p>The start/stop button for the engine and the Drive Select switch with the Dynamic/ Sport/Race settings are arranged on the steering wheel. The latter controls the engine and transmission electronics as well as the magnetic ride dampeners in each of three different modes.</p>
<p>In Race mode, the instrument lighting changes from white to red. The navigation system shows a combined display with lap timer and navigation information for the racetrack being driven. Or supplementary information such as centrifugal force and boost pressure can be called up.</p>
<p>Concentrating on the essentials was the priority in the ergonomic arrangement of all Audi R8 versions. The most important consideration – particularly for high-speed driving – is short reach distances for all controls, to keep the time that the driver has only one hand on the steering wheel to a bare minimum. In typical Audi style the monitor is well within the field of view, and the elements of the MMI operating system are located directly below it.</p>
<p>Compared with the production version, the R8 TDI Le Mans’s interior has much larger aluminum applications, especially around the center console. The many carbon fiber elements give the interior a decidedly sporty feel.</p>
<p>The R8&#8217;s exceptional everyday practicality for a sports car is maintained in the study vehicle&#8217;s spaciousness, even though the longer engine takes up more room. The two occupants have the generous wheelbase of 2.65 meters (8.69 ft.) to thank for the interior comfort. This means the driver and passenger will always be able to find their perfect seated position, whatever their build. The view is also very good for a mid-engine vehicle. Narrow A-posts optimize the field of view to the front and sides.</p>
<p>Light but Highly Rigid Body</p>
<p>The body of a sports car needs to be particularly light and rigid. Low weight permits superior road performance, and rigidity is the crucial starting point for an agile driving feel allied to high precision. The Audi Space Frame body, made from aluminum, provides the ideal basis for this.</p>
<p>Audi has more expertise than any other manufacturer worldwide in the design and production of vehicles based on aluminum technology, and has channeled its accumulated know-how into this area.</p>
<p>The entire bodyshell of the study car weighs just 210 kilograms (462.97 lbs.). In ASF technology, the body&#8217;s supporting structure is made of extruded aluminum sections and die-castings. Aluminum panels are incorporated into this skeleton to form a positive connection and perform a load-bearing role. Each individual component of the ASF space frame is optimized for its specific task by the use of widely differing shapes and cross-sections, combining maximum stability with minimal weight. It adds up to a car that’s particularly light and rigid, an outcome that can be felt in the R8’s ultra-precise driving feel.</p>
<p>The aerodynamics experts at Audi have done their work so thoroughly on the study car that, as an added benefit of its elegant shape, the body actually generates downforce – unlike many other sports cars. This aids directional stability at high speeds. It is achieved partly by means of an extending rear spoiler that is much larger than on the production version, and also thanks to the fully clad diffuser underbody.</p>
<p>Two large-format diffuser apertures in the rear bumper demonstrate just how much aerodynamics dictate the shape of the study vehicle. The tailpipes of the exhaust system are located in pairs on the right and left above the diffuser apertures. The add-on, automatically extended rear spoiler also interacts with the air as it flows around the car. The extra downforce it provides increases the efficiency of the air intake generated by the aerodynamic design of the underbody and diffusers. At low speeds, the rear spoiler returns to its initial position.</p>
<p>Chassis</p>
<p>The precision chassis of the Audi R8 TDI Le Mans remains supremely in control of the sporty performance, but is capable of assuring relaxed driving pleasure over long distances too. The sports car is spontaneous and agile at obeying steering movements, always demonstrating exceptionally good driving safety. The suspension, with double wishbones at both the front and rear, is optimized for a neutral self-steering response and maximum ease of control.</p>
<p>The study car, too, has the innovative dampening technology known as Audi magnetic ride. This adapts the chassis characteristic to the profile of the road and the driver&#8217;s style within milliseconds.</p>
<p>Ceramic Brakes with Extreme Reserves</p>
<p>A generously dimensioned brake system supplies the necessary braking force. It applies a total of 24 pistons to the four brake disks, combining excellent performance with minimal weight and high durability. The disks are made from carbon fiber reinforced ceramic, a material that has repeatedly proven its worth in the aviation and aerospace sectors. The basis is very hard, frictionally resistant silicon carbide, with its diamond-like crystalline structure. Embedded in it are high-strength carbon fibers that absorb the stresses occurring in the material. The intricate geometry of cooling ducts in the ventilated disks prevents extremely high temperatures. The ceramic brake disk ring is bolted by 10 spring-loaded elements to a stainless steel central element that acts as the connection with the wheel&#8217;s hub.</p>
<p>The ceramic brakes are identifiable at a glance by the special red, six-piston monobloc aluminum calipers and the fixed calipers at the rear. The advantages of the ceramic brakes include a further reduction in weight of around 20 kilograms (44.09 lbs.), which in this case improves the handling characteristics and comfort. The high abrasion resistance permits an operating life of up to 300,000 kilometers (186,411 miles). Their key strength, however, is their ability to withstand very high loads. Even on the racetrack, for example, the ceramic brakes always maintain their full reserve performance.</p>
<p>Vorsprung durch Technik: Diesel Milestones from Audi</p>
<p>Audi has reached another milestone in diesel technology with the new V12 TDI. The brand with the four rings has been performing vital pioneering work in this area for the past three decades. The first TDI auto engine made its debut in 1989. The 2.5 liter five-cylinder power unit developed 88 kW (120 hp) and 261 Nm, catapulting diesel driving into an entirely new dimension.</p>
<p>This was followed in 1994 by a development version generating 103 kW (140 hp). This engine was optionally available with all-wheel drive – the first TDI quattro model. A new four-cylinder diesel appeared at that time in the Audi 100 and Audi 80, the 1.9 TDI developing 66 kW (90 hp) that has now become legendary.</p>
<p>At the end of 1995 the output of this four-cylinder unit rose to 85 kW (115 hp) with the advent of pump-injector fuel injection. Slightly more than one year later, at the start of 1997, the world&#8217;s first 2.5 V6 TDI appeared.</p>
<p>With four valves per cylinder, it achieved an output of 110 kW (150 hp), and its top speed of 220 km/h (136.70 mph) made the Audi A8 the fastest production diesel on the market. The first eight-cylinder TDI followed in 1999 – a V8 engine with a 3.3 liter capacity. The 3.0 TDI made its debut early in 2004 as the first V6 diesel with inline piezo injectors in the common rail system.</p>
<p>The 4.2 liter TDI launched in the A8 in 2005 is currently at the vanguard of Audi&#8217;s TDI range. One in three A8 buyers in Germany chose this V8 engine. The next logical step was to make the V8 TDI available in the Audi Q7 in summer 2007.</p>
<p>With extremely clean, ultra-low emission technology, Audi is continuing its tradition of leadership in diesel engine technology. In 1989 it was the Ingolstadt brand that developed direct injection technology. Since then the diesel engine has become around 30 percent more efficient.</p>
<p>The Euro 4 European emission standard has reduced particulate emissions for cars by 93 percent. Long before it came into force, Audi had models on the market that met this standard, even without a particulate filter. And the brand will be offering the world&#8217;s cleanest diesel engines in production vehicles in 2008. The TDI engines with the ultra-low emission system will be the first in the world to meet the forthcoming EU 6 emission standard as well as the toughest known statutory limits that apply in the U.S.</p>
