Finally the Alfa Romeo Mi.To soap opera of the last few months is drawing to a close with the final episode, including precious photographs published by Autoweek, revealing the interior without its camouflage.

The compartment is enriched with carbon finishes and leather seats without diminishing the sporty sensation of the bodywork and driving dynamics. The central console in shiny material combines with the general dark environment that dominates. The only thing missing is the third open compartment so characteristic of all Alfas. Of note however are the seats which appear quite wrap-around, though any hopes of seeing a Ferrari-style steering wheel with manettino dials to change the Alfa DNA have been dashed, with the dials appearing next to the gear shift as per the prototypes.

Another video for the Alfa Romeo MiTo which continues to play on the gradual leaking of details on the part of users involved by the company, step by step. The video is in Italian but shows off the great driving of the small car.

This time Philippe Krief, tester who we already encountered in a video on the snow at Arjeplog in Lapland, Sweden, shows us the dynamic quality of the Italian car. The tester explains the novelties introduced in suspension to increase rigidity and reduce the body roll compared to the 147, then notes the lower shift chosen for the steering and finally checks off with the AlfaDNA function.

Given that official shots are ever decreasing, we have had to content ourselves with spy shots that show the MiTo, by now nearly completely uncovered, in the course of the latest tests before its debut on the market.

Visto che le foto ufficiali continuano a scarseggiare, ci dobbiamo accontentare delle foto spia che immortalano la MiTo, oramai quasi del tutto scoperta, nel corso degli ultimi collaudi prima del debutto sul mercato.

These shots from CarAdvice, who has been working very hard in playing on the expectation of Alfa fans, spied this prototype in unusual blue livery.

There’s not much else to say: the MiTo testers will become more hunted by the paparazzi than the stars of Hollywood…

The 40-year-old Austrian, after having graduated from the Swiss Art Center Europe, started his career at Volkswagon, before then passing to Audi’s Advance Design, and then finally finishing in Japan for Nissan. It will be interesting to see what Stephenson’s approach will be: after having brought to life the Mini and the 500, will he again give himself to another instant classic?

The official blog of the Alfa Mi.To has arrived online, the baby version having finally been revealed last Friday. The most interesting part is definitely the “Meet Mi.To” which allows for some lucky users to discover, and then reveal to others the Mi.To, after having seen it in person at the Centro Stile Alfa.

Navigating through the site the first technical data of the Mi.To can be read: the measurements, as we had already indicated, are 406 x 144 x 172 cm, with a wheelbase of 251, while the trunk and fuel tank capacity are at 270 and 45 litres. A curiosity: it seems that the car can be adapted for both four or five occupants, according to customers’ needs.

For the engines the 1.4 turbo 155 hp has been confirmed, the same as the Abarth Grande Punto. The five cylinder “Euro 5 ready” handles an overboost function, where the Torque passes from 206 to 230 Nm. In the video, Sergio Cravero explains the reasons behind the choice of the name Mi.To.

The official announcement of the Alfa Mi.To is out. Mi.To is short for Milano-Torino: Milan is the historical Alfa Romeo base and the place where the Mi.To was designed, Turin is the city that will be responsbible for the Mi.To’s production.

The Mi.To’s style is inspired by the 8C Competizione, especially the glass surfaces, the front, the headlights and the frontlights.

The Mito has dimensions very similar to those of the Grande Punto, with which it shares the underlying platform: 4.06 metres long, 1.44 metres high and 1.72 metres wide.

Initially there will be four turbocharged engines, ranging from 90 hp to 155 hp. There are no details on the exact engines, but we can expect the 90 hp engine to be the same 1.3 JTD used in the Grande Punto and the 155 hp engine to be the same 1.4 T-Jet used in the Grande Punto Abarth. The other two engines will probably be the 120 hp 1.4 T-Jet and another diesel engine (either the 105 hp power step of the 1.3 JTD or the new 1.6 JTD).

Alfa Mi.To: World Premiere
With the Mi.To, Alfa Romeo wishes to offer a new generation of Alfa aficionados the most compact sports car ever.

An up-to-date and innovative car, a name redolent of history. The name Mi.To has great evocative resonance for Alfa Romeo, since it was chosen as a sign of a deep-seated link between the past and future of the brand: between Milan, the city of design that brought the car’s style into being, and Turin, which will be responsible for its industrial production. A decision that highlights the brand’s strong desire to consolidate its Milanese roots.

The Mi.To is the first car to be built since the 8C Competizione, Alfa Romeo’s icon of style and technology, from which it borrows certain characteristic traits: the particular shape of the unframed side windows, the three-lobed motif that distinguishes the front bumper, the shape of the headlights and the LED tail lights. The headlights and tail lights represent a distinctive personalised feature: a frame featuring different forms of material processing and colours to create an ultra-stylish eye-liner effect that underscores the car’s style and aggression.

The highly personal dashboard and seats ensure that the interior represents the ultimate expression of Italian style, welcoming yet sporty, with top-quality materials and the closest attention to detail.

The greatest thought has also gone into defining the dimensions, which add up to a compact and dynamic shape: the Mi.To is 4.06 metres long, 1.44 metres high and 1.72 metres wide.

Style, design, and more: performance and technology must always be top-of-the-range in an Alfa Romeo. As all the brand’s models, the Mi.To is able to appeal to the most demanding customers with its exciting driveability, determined partly to the Alfa DNA system. This control acts on the engine, brakes, steering, suspension and gearbox, allowing three different vehicle behaviour modes based on the driving style best suited to the situation or the customer’s wishes: supersporting (Dynamic), town driving (Normal), maximum safety even in difficult grip conditions (All-Weather). Mi.To is the first car in its segment to offer such innovative technological content.

Great performances are guaranteed by a range of 4 engines, all Turbo (petrol and diesel), that currently range from 90 hp up to 155 hp, with the range due to be extended by even higher power ratings.

Performance and handling have been developed and optimised to offer maximum driving satisfaction in complete safety. The Mi.To offers true Alfa Romeo sporting ride, featuring contractive suspensions – standard on all specifications and engines – that considerably reduce roll and maximum active, passive and preventive safety: VDC stability system as standard and a vehicle structure that is already designed to obtain the top EuroNCAP rating in the future.

The Alfa Mi.To will be introduced to the international press during June and will then be gradually introduced from July in all the major markets.

In view of the debut in the United States, the Biscione management is evaluating the possibility of establishing a manufacturing base in Mexico. The ufficial decision will be finalized by the end of the year: the head-to-head between the central American state and Canada, possibility revealed some months ago, would already be underway.

In a light-hearted moment, De Meo wanted to reassure Alfa fanatics, reinforcing that the desire to restore the brand’s values will not be disregarded: “in occasion of the centennial we will present a never-before-seen model”. On his admission though, the 140 project (the future 149) and the 141 project (the future 169) are not under discussion.

The latest is about the name of the car known until now as “Alfa Junior”. After the unsatisfying Alfa Naming contest, now there’s talk of difficulties in registering a trademark for the Junior name.

The latest names being bandied about are Alfa Mito or Alfa Milano. As support for these hypotheses, the Progetto955.it blog has discovered that the “alfamito” and “alfamilano” domains have been registerd by Fiat Group all over Europe.

Alfa Romeo is about to return to the United States, as stressed many times by Sergio Marchionne, Fiat Group CEO. Marchionne also declared that Fiat Group will build a brand new plant in the US that will assemble only Alfa Romeo cars.

Mentioning the strength of the euro on the US dollar as the main reason for such a decision, the Marchionne stated that manufacturing cars in North America is vital to the Alfa Romeo brand. Marchionne also added that Alfa will start to make profits on the US market only three or four years after the brand’s debut.

A curiosity: this won’t be the first Fiat plant in the United States as the italian brand built a factory in Poughkeepsie (NY) back in 1909. Meanwhile, Alfa’s most important factory in Pomigliano D’Arco will stay closed for two months (January 7th- March 2nd 2008) for an “update”.
